Sunday morning, I called Yumi from my kitchen phone. Yumi’s recent ghostly encounter had really disturbed her. I had completely forgotten about the spooky story about her brother and mom. Of course she could see ghosts! I called to see if we were still on for the special screening of Ghostbusters at the Sticksville Mews, as it was likely Yumi would not want to watch any movies featuring ghosts. Even if they were being busted.
In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the most sensitive thing in the world to bring Yumi to the movies when I one hundred-percent knew there would be five ghosts in the audience, but I needed to get out to that remote Sticksville neighbourhood, and there was no way Dad was letting me go to the movies on my own on Sunday night. He was wigged out enough by my night cemetery residencies. Stacey was the only other option, and I wasn’t about to ask him out to the movies. That would seem too much like a date, and while Stacey makes for a fine friend and fake dad, I couldn’t even begin to fathom the two of us making out in the front row. Uh, no thanks. Yumi was going to be my movie date, by process of friend elimination.
“Hey, Zombie Tramp,” I said.
“Um . . . hello? Who is this?”
Clearly, the voice at the other end of the line wasn’t Yumi’s. Whoops.
“Oh, uh, hi, Mr. Takeshi. Is Yumi home?”
Mr. Takeshi bellowed for Yumi at the other end, declaring that her questionable friend, me, wanted to speak with her.
“Hey, October.” Yumi sounded like she was talking with a mouth full of water crackers.
“So, how are you doing? . . . With the ghosts . . . and stuff.”
“Been better . . . didn’t sleep much last night.”
In the background, Yumi’s dad yelled and swore and made sounds like he was rearranging boxes in a glass factory.
“What’s happening over there?”
“Dad’s looking for his shoes. We’re supposed to go to church in a few minutes . . . I forgot and Stacey took them home.”
“You gave Stacey your dad’s only good pair of shoes?”
“It’s okay. He’ll wear his New Balance shoes and lose face for a week.”
“So . . . did you still want to go to the movies later? We don’t have to . . . we can just hang out.”
“No, it’s okay. Movie ghosts are still okay. I’ll see you at your place at six.”
Yumi hung up, the cacophony of her dad’s mad search resounding through the phone cord. With a sudden click, I realized I had the whole afternoon to myself. I decided to meet up with an old friend: Olivia de Kellerman.
It had been weeks since I had written anything in the Two Knives, One Thousand Demons notebook that actually related to the story. I’d thought I’d given up for good, but I reconsidered and decided it was time to give novel writing another shot. We were making progress on the Mr. O’Shea mystery, and, really, he would have wanted me to keep working on the novel, if you thought about it that way.
